2025 Summer Reading Lists:
Early Childhood: Ages 2-5
Elementary: Kindergarten, Grade 1, Grade 2, Grade 3, Grade 4
Middle School: Grades 5 & 6, Grades 7 & 8
Summer is an excellent time for children to experience the joy of reading. I have put together a list of suggested titles--both fiction and nonfiction--for each grade level. More important than students checking off each book on the list is that students use the list as a starting point to explore their own reading interests. A child may read a biography of Nelson Mandela, then decide to find other books on this well-regarded figure. Or, a child may read one of Cornelia Funke’s enchanting fantasy books, then look for more books in this genre. I have tried to make the lists diverse so that children can find a book to match their taste or interest. The journey from that point is their own. Below are general suggestions for how to promote the love of reading in your child.
Read with your child. Children, even older ones, love to read books with an adult. This can mean reading to each other or listening to an audiobook together.
Allow for choice. A library or bookstore with a healthy collection is a great place for children to see the range of books available.
Create a quiet time in your day. Our modern lives include many distractions. Establish a time when children know they can focus on a book.
Embrace all forms of storytelling. Community theaters are wonderful places for children to see how a story can be brought to life.
